Meta Is Asking Apple To Let You AirPlay Your iPhone Content Or Screen To Quest

Meta is asking Apple to let Quest be an AirPlay receiver.

Meta’s VP of VR Mark Rabkin introduced the request in a submit on X, saying he “would completely love” this to occur.

If the request is accredited by Apple, iPhone and iPad customers would be capable of solid media to Quest, and even your complete display screen, as if it have been a TV with AirPlay help.

This might make up for Quest’s lack of native media streaming apps in comparison with Apple Imaginative and prescient Professional. There’s a YouTube app, Netflix app, Peacock app, and Amazon Prime Video on Quest. Nevertheless:

  • The Netflix app hasn’t been up to date for years. It solely streams at 480p, requires controllers, and does not help downloads or passthrough.
  • The Peacock app is basically only a shortcut to the web site, so does not help downloads.
  • The Amazon Prime Video app is so deserted that it now not even connects.

By supporting AirPlay, Meta may piggyback off the consumer’s iPhone already having high-quality variations of those apps and this may probably enhance retention on Quest. After all, Apple could deny the request given it has a competing headset and has had traditionally bitter relations with Meta, or on technical grounds unrelated to these causes.
